We pass through the present with our eyes blindfolded. We are permitted merely to sense and guess at what we are actually experiencing. Only later when the cloth is untied can we glance at the past and find out what we have experienced and what meaning it has.
-Milan Kundera
Once Removed questions memory and takes a visual look at hindsight. Asking the questions of our perception of memories and if we would make different choices if given the chance.
I began by experimenting with embroidery over old family photographs printed on canvas. I found myself continuously embroidering over the eyes, obscuring faces, and slicing multiple images to combine young and old versions of family members, taking these memories and skewing them visually, much like we do with our minds over time.
These pieces ask my ancestors and myself questions long past the time they can be answered.
